Meet The Design Team

Hillary Littlejohn Scurtis

FOUNDER

is known for creating timeless spaces inspired by modern classicism. Since opening her namesake firm in 2005, Hillary Littlejohn Scurtis Design, Hillary has collaborated with clients to achieve interior landscapes that synergistically blend the refined use of materials, developed a sense of color, and strong silhouettes. Hillary believes that lifestyle and beauty dictate all design and are the first consideration in creating unique spaces for each client. Hillary received a B.A. from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX and is a graduate of the New School Parsons Interior Design, NY, NY.

WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO PAINT COLOR?
My favorite front door color is Farrow & Ball’s “Railings”.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO DESIGN KIDS’ SPACES VS ADULTS’?
These two spaces differ in many elements including scale but also in durability and ability to transition. A room that works well for a 4-year-old is very different for an 11-year-old. When you design, you want to address the physical and emotional growth of the child, while also allowing their personality to be reflected in the space.

WHERE DO PEOPLE MAKE THE BIGGEST MISTAKE WHEN TRYING TO ‘DIY’ THEIR INTERIORS?
The biggest mistake clients make with DIY is scale. The sofas are usually too big and the sconces too small and secondly, inevitably there is not enough flattering lighting.

Susana Kempen

STUDIO DIRECTOR

While my degree and work history is in graphic design, deep down I always knew interior design should have been my career path. In an unexpected turn of events, the company I had worked at for 10 years was closing and moving, leaving me questioning my future plans. The day I met Hillary was my lucky day, and thankfully she saw something in me and decided to give me a chance. After continuing education in Interior Design and 2 years later at HLS, I can safely say I feel like I am exactly where I should be: my happy place! It’s a lifestyle, not a job at HLS.

Where do you find yourself usually drawing inspiration from?
The most unexpected things inspire me, usually while visiting a new city or country or just simply walking down the street and something catching my eye.

What is your favorite room to design?
While designing all rooms has its charm, my favorites are kitchens, bathrooms, and children’s rooms.

Do you prefer a client to hand over the reigns or to have a very specific plan for their interiors?
We love when our client trusts us and know we will design spaces they will love, so I would say Clients who hand over the reigns and know they are in good hands with us.

Paty Duran

SENIOR DESIGNER

Most of the times I enter a space before I even speak to anyone or get to where I need to go, I will walk in touching the walls, looking up to the ceiling, and observing all the details. To say that my curiosity and passion for design are inherent about my personality is an understatement.  I believe everyone can appreciate something beautiful, but not everyone will stop to try to understand the perfect balance between its function and aesthetic, the hindsight of its production, and the way it will age as it moves into the future. I think that was what lead to me to study and obtain a Masters of Architecture, and it has been that solid design ground that has shaped my interior design perspective.

What are the top things you need to consider besides budget when thinking about a project?
That cliché, but very true life motto, timing is everything.

While we’re on the subject, what is your biggest design pet-peeve?
When I walk into a space and everything is shiny. Eek!

When you go to someone’s home, do you mentally redesign it? The truth!
I do have many, “what were you thinking when you bought this?” moments.

Gorgeous paint color or killer wallpaper?
Killer wallpaper.
